This is the reduced clearances at the Kentish Flats and BritNed cable crossings with the London array cable where rock berms have been installed.  See below in Week 5 for images of location.

Week 5

London Array - Reduced clearances at the Kentish Flats and BritNed cable crossings.

Kentish Flats cable crossings (51° 25'.217N, 001° 06'.033E).

At these three crossings the typical sea bed level was -4m LAT. Due to the newly installed rock berm the depth in some areas is now -1.5m LAT.

BritNed cable crossing (51° 28'.583N, 001° 17'.417E).

At this crossing the seabed level varies from -6.5m LAT to -9m LAT. Due to the newly installed rock berm the depth in some areas is now -4m LAT.

The start and end coordinates of the rock berm are given in the following tables

Crossing:

Kentish Flats

From: 51° 25'.203N 001° 05'.895E  to 51° 25'.252N 001° 06'.169E

BritNed

From 51° 28'.549N 001° 17'.372E  to 51° 28'.599N 001° 17'.457E

Note this is not a UKHO NtM as yet but issued by the London Array.  It provides details of a serious reduction in depths particularly where the London Array cable passes over the cable from the Kentish Flat Wind Farm.

A rock berm is a rock barrier wall.  There is no information as to its construction but it can be assumed to be substantial enough to provide protection and stability to the cable crossing.  Whether these will be marked is not known at present.

This Notice whilst quite lengthy because of all the variations for different Admiralty Charts effectively comprises two messages for commercial shipping: first a warning to crossing traffic in the Dover Straits leaving the north-east going lane and crossing the south-west going lane.  Second, guidance about use of the Sandettie Deep Water route (for vessels with a draught of 16m or more) and the use by vessels of less than 16m draught of the main lane south-east of the Sandettie Bank.

It follows that leisure vessels should not be in the Deep Water route!

The notice comprises blocks (all similar within their subject) for pasting on Admiralty Charts.  All can be downloaded here as PDF files for cutting and pasting.

Reduced depths at the Long Sand Head. Whilst these new depths will in general not trouble leisure users in settled weather, this is continuing evidence of the extension north-east of the Long Sand Head.  Note that the Black Deep PHB has already been moved twice to reflect earlier changes in the last six months.

Red Spots mark the position of the new soundings.

This means there is nothing between the entrance to the Princes Channel and the NW Long Sand Beacon to mark the Shingles.
